Tudor was made at water level in the middle of the day, looking up at a wave that had grown very tall and very dark. The face is deep navy-green, almost vertical, the lip just beginning to curl at the top. Fine lines of water stream down the face. Behind it, the sky is a clean pale blue — clear and bright, the full light of midday making the darkness of the wave all the more striking by contrast.

There is a formality to this wave. It does not rush. It rises with the kind of deliberate weight that makes you understand exactly how much water is moving, and how little say you would have in the matter if you were in its path.

Midday on the South Coast strips away the warmth of golden hour and replaces it with something harder and more honest. The Sapphire Coast in full sun is vivid and unforgiving — and this wave wears that light exactly as it should.
