Persephon was made at sunrise on the South Coast, in the kind of early morning light that turns the ocean into something from another world. The wave is thick and heavy, its top perfectly flat like the edge of a cliff, the face deeply textured with reflective lines of light running vertically down to the water below, the sunrise catching the surface of the wave and streaking it with gold. Behind it, warm light breaks through layers of dramatic cloud, the sky a palette of amber, grey and soft gold that holds the glassy ocean in a stillness the wave itself is about to end.
There is something geological about this photograph. The wave does not look like water in motion, it looks like a landform, a mesa rising from the sea, ancient and indifferent. The lines of reflected light running down its face add to this quality, as if the sunrise has found every ridge and groove in the water and illuminated them individually. It existed for a fraction of a second. But the camera found it at the exact moment it looked permanent.
Shot on the Sapphire Coast in the golden hour before the day began, when the ocean was still and the light was doing everything. Persephon is the wave that arrived in the middle of it.
