Inadelis was made from water level on the South Coast, on a day when the sky had closed over and the ocean had turned the colour of slate. Out of that grey, a single wave rose, not breaking, not rushing, just rising. A sharp peak, precise as a mountain, lifting itself above the dark textured surface of the water and holding its form against the heavy overcast sky behind it.

There is a weight to this photograph that comes from the clouds as much as the water. The sky presses down, the ocean pushes up, and between them this one form asserts itself with quiet authority. It is the geometry of the ocean at its most elemental, a peak, a horizon, and the grey that holds them both.

Mountains take millennia to form. This one had a second. And yet the feeling is the same, something rising from the earth, or in this case the sea, with a stillness that makes everything around it feel small.
