Aspar was made on the South Coast in conditions that had no interest in being beautiful. The ocean is near-black, heavy with the weight of a swell that had been building for days. The wave rises alone in the frame dark, massive, the lip beginning to crumble before it has even begun its descent. There is no explosion here. Just the slow, inevitable collapse of something that has run out of time to hold itself together.
The only light in this photograph comes from the wave itself the white water catching what little light the sky was offering and throwing it back. Everything else is dark. The ocean, the sky, the space around the wave. It exists in its own dim glow, isolated and indifferent.
This is the Sapphire Coast on a day when the Southern Ocean arrived with dead weight and thunder. Not the ocean of postcards. The ocean as it actually is when the swell is up and the sky has closed over and there is nothing between you and Antarctica but open water.
