Efora was made at Kiama, looking down at the wave rather than up at it. The perspective shifts everything. The face is dark and deeply textured below, the white water streaming off the lip in long trails, and beyond it the ocean catches the light bright and open against the weight of the wave in the foreground.
It is a photograph about contrast and angle. The darkness of the wave face against the brightness of the water beyond. The chaos of the breaking lip against the stillness of the open ocean behind it. Seen from above, the wave becomes something different less a wall of water, more a landscape.
Shot at Kiama on the South Coast, where the swell arrives with purpose and the light does what it wants.
