Astrea II was made from inside the wave as close as it is possible to get without being consumed by it. The frame is filled entirely with the face of the barrel, the water translucent green glass where the light passes through, deepening into shadow where the curl folds over itself.
There is no horizon here. No sky, no beach, no reference point. Just the architecture of the wave itself the way the water thins at the lip, the texture of the surface, the geometry of something that exists for less than a second before it collapses into white water.
It is an abstract photograph in the truest sense. The subject is light through water. The result is something that reads differently depending on how far away you stand from it.
