Gulaga Sunset

There are places along the South Coast of New South Wales where the landscape feels like it carries its own story.

Gulaga Sunset captures one of those moments. The final light of the day falling across the coastline as Mount Gulaga rises quietly against the changing sky. As the sun begins to disappear, the landscape transforms, revealing the subtle colours, textures and atmosphere that make this region so unique.

For me, this image represents more than a beautiful view. It reflects the connection between place and memory the feeling of standing still and witnessing a moment that will never happen in exactly the same way again.

Gulaga has long been a powerful presence on the Far South Coast, standing above the surrounding landscape with a sense of permanence and belonging. Known as Mother Mountain by the Yuin people, Gulaga holds deep cultural significance and connection to Country.

Photographing this landscape is about more than capturing its appearance. It is about preserving the feeling of being there the quietness of the evening, the changing light, the vastness of the horizon and the sense of connection created by this remarkable place.

Gulaga Sunset is part of my ongoing exploration of the relationship between light, atmosphere and the Australian landscape. Through my photography, I aim to create images that invite reflection and allow people to reconnect with moments of natural beauty.

Artist's Quiet Thoughts

I have spent much of my life drawn to the coastline, and places like Gulaga remind me why.

There is something powerful about watching the last light of the day move across a landscape. The colours change, the shadows grow longer and for a brief moment everything feels still.

What I love most about photography is that it allows us to hold onto those fleeting moments not just how a place looked, but how it felt to stand there.

Gulaga has always had a presence that is difficult to explain. It is not just a mountain on the horizon; it is part of the character of this coastline. This photograph is my way of capturing a small moment within that much larger story. Greg Selby
